How do GLP-1 medications work?

GLP-1 injections are medications that aid in weight loss by helping with appetite suppression, regulation of insulin production, and the slowing of gastric emptying which increases the feeling of being fuller longer.

Why are they compounded with B6 or B12?

B6 can help manage nausea, a common side effect of the medication. Both B6 and B12 contribute to energy metabolism, helping the body convert carbohydrates into glucose for energy production.**

What are the possible side effects?

Both medications have similar side effects and may vary from person to person, but the most common include:

  • GI symptoms- nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, heartburn/reflex
  • Headache and fatigue
  • More serious side effects could occur and will be discussed

How much weight will I lose?

About 15% of people that use the medications will not see clinical weight loss results. This is dependent on your body as well as other factors. However, most people are responsive to treatment and will see even more significant results with change in dietary habits and regular exercise. While the medication may assist you to your goal, if you are not eating healthier and being physically active, your results may be less than anticipated.

Will I gain my weight back after discontinuing the medication?

As with all weight management programs and medications, the key is changing old habits. If these changes aren’t made, you will gain the weight back. GLP-1 medications are tools to help motivate you by allowing you to see your progress. It’s up to you to continue that progress long after your goal is reached. After all, it’s everyone’s goal to feel good and live well!
